In our new Conversations with Our SMEs series, we’re sitting down with members of the Larus team to explore the perspectives that inform our work and the future of decision intelligence.
First up is Eric Sauvé, a member of Larus’ Program and Service Delivery team.
We spoke with Eric about his career, the importance of decision intelligence, and why operational relevance remains at the heart of defence innovation.
Tell us about your background.
I served for 22 years in the Canadian Armed Forces as an infantry and intelligence officer. During that time, I deployed to both Bosnia and Afghanistan and held a variety of operational, intelligence, and leadership positions. I also had the opportunity to work alongside allied organizations, including NATO and the U.S. defence community.
After leaving the military, I chose to stay connected to the defence sector by working as a consultant, instructor, and strategic advisor, helping governments and industry navigate increasingly complex security challenges.
Throughout that journey, I’ve always been motivated by finding practical ways to help organizations make better decisions and operate more effectively.
What attracted you to Larus?
What stood out to me was Larus’ focus on solving real operational problems rather than developing technology for its own sake.
Throughout my career, I saw how difficult it can be for commanders and analysts to make decisions under intense time pressure while processing enormous amounts of information. The challenge isn’t a lack of data. It’s making sense of it quickly enough to support effective decisions.
Larus is tackling exactly that problem by using AI and data fusion to help people make faster, better-informed decisions. That’s a mission I can relate to personally because I’ve experienced those challenges firsthand.
What is your role at Larus today?
My role is focused on program and service delivery.
I work closely with customers to ensure projects are delivered successfully and that our solutions meet their operational requirements. That means translating customer needs into effective outcomes, coordinating delivery, and helping organizations realize the full value of Larus’ capabilities.
Having spent much of my career as an operational user, I understand the importance of delivering solutions that work in the real world, not just in theory. Technology has to support the mission and the people relying on it.
Why is decision intelligence becoming so important for today’s defence organizations?
Modern military operations generate more information than any individual or staff can realistically process.
The challenge is no longer collecting data. It’s turning that data into timely, actionable decisions.
Decision intelligence helps commanders and analysts prioritize what matters, identify patterns, reduce cognitive overload, and make sense of increasingly complex operational environments.
As AI, autonomous systems, and multi-domain operations continue to evolve, organizations that can accelerate decision-making while maintaining human judgment will have a significant operational advantage.
The goal isn’t to replace people. It’s to help them make better decisions with greater confidence.
What continues to motivate your work?
After leaving the military, I deliberately chose to stay connected to the defence community because I still wanted to contribute to Canada’s security.
Over the years, one thing has become very clear to me: innovation only matters if it reaches the people who need it.
What excites me about Larus is the opportunity to help bridge the gap between operational requirements and emerging technology. If we can deliver better information to decision-makers at the right time, we can make a meaningful difference where it matters most.
