In our new Conversations with Our SMEs series, we’re sitting down with members of the Larus team to explore the perspectives that inform our work and the future of decision intelligence.
This edition features Jean-Yves Belzile, a Subject Matter Expert at Larus.
We spoke with Jean-Yves about his career, why operational context is essential to defence innovation, and the growing importance of decision intelligence.
Tell us about your background.
I served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 30 years, beginning my career as an Artillery Officer before transitioning to the Intelligence Branch. After completing my early service in the Army, I joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Intelligence Officer.
Throughout my career, I held several senior leadership positions, including Director of Intelligence for the Royal Canadian Air Force, NORAD Deputy Director General of Intelligence, Director General Coordination at the Strategic Joint Staff, Commanding Officer of the Canadian Joint Warfare Centre, and Assistant Chief of Staff at Canadian Forces Intelligence Command.
I also deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan, serving within both U.S. and NATO headquarters. Those experiences provided valuable insight into how defence organizations operate in complex, multinational environments and reinforced the importance of delivering timely, reliable information to decision-makers.
What attracted you to Larus?
Two things stood out immediately.
First, the strength of the organization’s scientific foundation. Second, its ability to rapidly understand complex problems and develop practical, tailored solutions.
Having spent much of my career in capability development, I’ve seen many organizations with exceptional technical expertise that struggled to adapt their solutions to real operational requirements.
What impressed me about Larus was its ability to combine technical excellence with a genuine understanding of the problems defence organizations are trying to solve.
What is your role at Larus today?
As a Subject Matter Expert, I work closely with Larus teams to help ensure our products are designed from the outset to meet the needs of potential customers.
That includes providing operational context, answering questions, and helping our technical experts access the most relevant and accurate information available throughout the development process.
I also work directly with customers during deployments and implementation, helping ensure they’re successful with our products and that any questions are addressed along the way.
Why is decision intelligence becoming so important for today’s defence organizations?
Defence organizations are operating in environments that are faster, more complex, and more uncertain than ever before.
Decision intelligence helps leaders cut through the noise, connect the right information to the right decisions, and respond with greater clarity, speed, and confidence.
As the volume of information continues to grow, organizations need tools that help them make sense of complexity without losing sight of the human judgment that remains central to effective decision-making.
Is there a Larus capability you’re particularly excited about?
I’m particularly excited about projects like ScenarioGPT and MAABI because they demonstrate how AI can support better planning and more informed decision-making in complex defence environments.
What stands out to me is their ability to help teams test different courses of action, anticipate potential threats, and move forward with greater confidence while ensuring humans remain at the centre of the decision-making process.
We’re also working on several other exciting initiatives that continue to push these capabilities even further.
